The idea of infinity has always been baffling, can something really go on forever, unlimited and endless. The common symbol for infinity, ∞ was invented by the English mathematician John Wallis in 1657. The most common view of infinity is that it it a number but that is incorrect. Infinity is not a number, but a concept, something without end. Infinity cannot be measured. The question is do we live in an infinite universe? Well the answer is that maybe we do, but we can only see a finite section due to the finite speed of light.

We can show that an infinitely increasing series in mathematics can have a finite boundary.

Take the series where each element is half the preceding element:

S_n = 1 + 1/2 + 1/4 + 1/8 ..... ∞

By simple algebra we can prove this is bounded by 2, ie

S_∞ = 2

Hence for any finite value of n

S_n < 2

So from this can we be sure that even if something is forever increasing in size it may be bounded.
